Software Developers Aren't Going Anywhere. But the Bar Just Moved.
AI isn't replacing developers—it's changing what it means to be one.

There's a recurring claim that developers are a dying breed. I don't buy it.
The Job Isn't Disappearing—It's Mutating
I've been coding for years. Still do, every day. I've used Copilot, moved to Cursor, moved again on Claude Code in the terminal. The tools keep getting better. The job isn't disappearing, it's mutating.
The old model was clear. Know your syntax. Stay focused. Be methodical. Now you can delegate most of that. Syntax matters less when AI writes the code. What matters is whether you can build a tight feedback loop. Whether you can act as a guardrail for what the AI produces. That's a different skill. Not one most of us were trained for.
What's Left Is the Harder Stuff
There's another shift. Because the grunt work is handled, what's left is the harder stuff: communication, architecture, system design. You can ask Claude to build a backend and a frontend, and the output will be impressive. But then your app hits API rate limits in production. Or your database chokes on n+1 queries. Or your server goes down because no one flagged a scaling issue in the generated code.
AI doesn't catch those things reliably. You do.
The New 10x Developer
Maybe this is what 10x developer actually looks like. Not genius-level output, but running multiple tasks in parallel, keeping context across them, catching regressions before they ship, maintaining a helicopter view while still holding the guardrails. AI makes that possible but also necessary.
More Demanding, More Selective
That's more mentally demanding than the old way. The slow, methodical, one-character-at-a-time work had a rhythm. You could get by on memory and discipline alone. This is different. You're constantly in the high-intensity zone. The job just got more demanding and more selective. The limiting factor is no longer what you know. It's how fast you think and how much your brain can hold at once.
Software developers aren't going anywhere. But the bar just moved.
