"We'll just build it in no-code." It's become a reflex, and often it's the right one. But between no-code, low-code, and custom software, the choice isn't about what's trendy — it's about what you'll still have to run in three years. Here's what each approach is actually good at, where it hits a ceiling, and a simple rule for deciding.

No-code, low-code, custom: what are we talking about?

  • No-code: you assemble an app in a visual interface, no code written. Fast, accessible to a business team, great for a form, a lightweight tracker, a simple automation.
  • Low-code: same visual logic, but you can drop in code where the platform runs out. More powerful, more technical, usually for a team that can develop a bit.
  • Custom: an application designed and built specifically for your process. No functional ceiling, and you own the code and the data.

All three produce working software. The difference shows up the moment your needs step outside what the tool was designed for.

When no-code is enough (and that's fine)

For a contact form, an internal tracker, a small automation between two tools, no-code is often the right call: it's live by the afternoon, with no development budget. As long as your need looks like what the platform was built to do, don't build anything more complicated than necessary.

When low-code helps

Low-code takes over when no-code hits its limits but a full project feels like overkill: a bit of business logic, an integration the platform didn't anticipate, one custom screen inside an otherwise standard tool. You gain flexibility, at the cost of a technical dependency on the platform.

The low-code and no-code ceiling

The problem almost never shows up at the start. It arrives when:

  • Your business logic doesn't fit the boxes. A pricing rule, a regulatory exception, a calculation specific to your industry: the platform didn't plan for it, and working around it becomes a fragile hack.
  • Integrations get stuck. Wiring cleanly into your ERP, your accounting, or your existing systems goes beyond what the standard connectors offer.
  • You own neither the code nor quite your data. Pricing climbs with your user count, and migrating off the tool, when the day comes, is expensive.

None of this is a dealbreaker for a simple use case. It becomes one when the tool turns into something your business runs on.

Custom is no longer just for big budgets

That's the real shift of the past two years. AI-assisted custom software development now costs a fraction of what it used to: what once required a long project and an enterprise budget is now within reach for an SME. The old trade-off ("custom would be better, but it's too expensive and too slow") no longer holds automatically.

And custom clears all three ceilings at once: your business logic is coded as it actually is, the integrations go as far as they need to, and you own the result. You're not renting a tool you have to adapt to — you have software that fits the way you work.

How to choose (the simple rule)

A heuristic that holds up almost every time:

  1. Simple and standard need? No-code. Don't do more.
  2. Nearly standard, with two or three exceptions? Low-code, if you have the technical skill in-house.
  3. It's the core of your business, with your logic and your integrations? Custom. That's exactly where the platform ceiling would cost you most, and exactly where custom has become affordable.

The most common trap isn't choosing no-code: it's forcing a core-business need into a platform that was never meant for it, then spending years working around it.
